Warning sign: Students need help with their ability to visualize number patterns if they can't remember math facts from one day to the next. As a result, they have to count on fingers to obtain the same math facts each day.

Warning sign: Students need help with their ability to visualize math concepts if they:

  • have to reread math problems several times and often remember only a few details rather than the "whole"

  • have trouble expressing their thoughts in an organized manner (orally or in writing) or

  • have trouble comprehending oral directions and are often labeled poor listeners.

Warning sign: Students need help with their ability to process math symbols if they:

  • add, omit, and switch numbers while reading and writing problems (read or write "12" for "21," or add instead of subtract)

  • use words to store numbers instead of a symbolic or visual representation

  • memorize patterns but are not able to effectively apply them to new problems

  • confuse number operations

  • avoid homework
